Oats- Non-Boring Savory Style!

Back home, I always used to have oats like 3-4 times a week. Don't know why I just stopped having oats since the time I moved to Mumbai.. Staying here, most of the time I take cereal for breakfast, it was only couple of weeks back that I made oats after a long time and realized what I had been missing on all this while!!


Oats as you all know is an excellent source of fiber, controls cholesterol and lowers risk of heart disease. Diet that includes oats reduces high blood pressure and risk of cancer. For all those aiming to reduce weight, start eating oats!!! It also helps in controlling Type 2 Diabetes. 


Best thing about oats is it can be made in just about 10 minutes! It is an incredible non -boring hot breakfast which is filling and keeps you energetic all day. Oatmeal can be eaten at any time of the day and is prepared in a variety of ways. You can make it sweet using milk and add fruits, nuts, dried fruits,chocolate chips or make it savory style (south-indian, Italian, Mexican). I feel adding milk and sugar makes it very heavy so I use water and being a fan of Italian cuisine, I make oatmeal Italian style! Try it and it is sure to become your favorite breakfast :)



Ingredients (Serves 1)





  • 1 small onion- chopped
  • 1 Tomato- chopped
  • 1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Oats- 1/2 measuring cup
  • Salt, Pepper
  • Crumbs of Feta Cheese
  • Balsamic Vingear/ Lemon Juice- 1 tsp
  • Black olives- sliced
  • Mixed herbs

Method

  • In a pan, add olive oil and sautee chopped onions till translucent.
  • Now add chopped tomato and cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Once chopped tomato starts losing its shape, add oats and stir for 2 mins on low heat.




  • Add 1 glass of water, salt, pepper,lemon juice and mixed herbs. Cover with a lid and cook till oats absorb all the water.



  • Spread crumbs of feta cheese and sliced olives just before serving.






 You can get your hands on Almarai brand of Feta. Once open, box of Feta will last for a month. Just keep it covered with cling. This dish will taste equally delicious without feta too. I personally like feta because its sharp and tangy and goes well with cooked soft oatmeal and tastes so so yum!
